The Steps To Replace A Light Fixture

Turn Off The Power

The first step to take is to turn off the power to the room you are going to work in. You can do this by switching off the circuit in your circuit breaker. Most of your breakers will be labeled and you should be able to find what you are looking for.

However, if your breakers are not labeled, you will need to turn on a different light in the room you will be working in. You can then turn off the breakers until this light goes off. It is recommended that you label the breaker for future reference. You should also ensure that the light switch is off before you start.

Remove The Old Fixture

Once the power is off, you can go about removing the old fixture. You will need to first remove the cover of the old fixture. All the old wire connectors will also need to be removed.

You should then untwist the installed wires from the fixture wires. The base will also need to be removed or you will need to trim this from the old fixture.

Tighten The Screws

After removing the old fixture, you will need to check the electrical box in the ceiling. Over time, this can become loose and you will need to tighten the screws that are holding it in place. However, you need to be careful and not tighten the screws too much.

You also need to check that the box is acceptable for the new fixture. It should also be securely attached to the building so that it can support the weight of the new fixture. The box also needs to be grounded. If you have any doubts about the box, you need to install a new one.

Connect The Wires

You can now start to connect the wires in the ceiling to your new fixture. You will need to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the fixture. Generally, the black wires will be connected to each other. The green wire is often the grounding wire and will be attached to the grounding crew.

To connect the wires, you will need to use a wire stripper to remove the protective coating on them first. The bare sections of the wires will need to be connected to each other. The connected wires will then have to be screwed on the wire connectors.

Install The New Fixture

Once the wiring has been completed, you can start installing the rest of the fixture. You will need to secure the base of the fixture before anything else. The fixture should come with the necessary hardware to do this. If you are working on a high ceiling, it is recommended that you get someone to help you.
